The General Council is the governing body of the Oblate Community. Members of the Community, elected by their peers, elect the six members of the General Council for a six-year term. The members may be elected for a second six-year term, but after two terms, they are not eligible for re-election.

The General Council is responsible for charting short and long-term goals for the Community. Included in the tasks of the General Council are: the fiscal well being of the Community, overseeing the formation program, the care of the elderly, and the opening of new foundations. During their six-year term, members of the General Council officially visit each house of the Community to speak individually with each Sister. In this way, the General Council keeps in touch with the needs and pulse of the local communities.
