Postulancy

The Postulancy is the beginning of a candidate’s formation with the Oblate Community. After contact with a vocation director in one of the local houses, the person will meet with a Sister to discuss and pray over the questions:

• Do I have a vocation to the religious life?
• Is my call to the Oblates of Jesus the Priest?

If the answers are “Yes” then the aspirant will be admitted to the Postulancy. This period lasts for one year. It is a time for the postulant to learn more about the Oblates of Jesus the Priest. During this time, the postulant prays and begins developing her spirituality with the other postulants. She also seeks to confirm her intention to pursue her vocation as an Oblate. At the end of the Postulancy, the candidate will be invited to join the Novitiate.

Novitiate

The Novitiate is a two-year period of growth in the spiritual life. It is a time of discernment during which the novice can build a firm foundation for communal and personal prayer, as well as community life. The Novice wears the habit of the Oblates, but with a white veil. Although the novices live separately from the professed Sisters, their house is within walking distance of the Oblate’s Motherhouse. The novices are always included in all major Community events with the professed Sisters and Juniors.

At the end of two years, the novice is invited to profess her temporary vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. She exchanges her white veil for the black veil of the professed Oblate Sister.

Juniorate

A junior is a Sister in temporary vows. She renews her vows each year for a period of six years. For the first two years, she is assigned to work in a parish or seminary with other members of the Oblate Community.

After that, she returns to the Juniors’ residence where she enrolls in the University to complete her degree in religious studies. During this time, community prayer and community life are further developed. Like the novices, the juniors are also included in all the major Community events at the Motherhouse.

At the end of the Juniorate, Sister makes her final profession of vows. She receives a gold ring signifying her commitment for life to Jesus the High Priest and the Oblates of Jesus the Priest.
